Student Exchange Programme

About Student Exchange Programmes in CityU

Student exchange offers a multitude of experiences that will eventually benefit you on many different fronts: educational, professional and personal. It is an important first step to get yourself prepared for the increasingly globalised world, raising your awareness about and skills for the multifaceted society. The Department stands to offer you the best possible services to facilitate your chosen exchange activities. You are encouraged to take a close look at the available exchange opportunities and talk to us whenever necessary.

Application guidelines

Eligibility

(Note. The eligibility criteria below are general criteria from the past few years and are subject to revision and change for each new round of application.)

  1. Full-time students enrolled on a CityU government-funded bachelor’s degree programme.
  2. Students from nominative 4-year undergraduate programmes should have completed at least ONE year of study and have major declared before you APPLY for Student Exchange Programme. For Advanced Standing students, you must have completed at least ONE year of study at CityU before the START of the exchange programme. Final-year students who intend to apply for exchange should consult their major leaders regarding the possibility of extending their graduation semester.
  3. Students must attain Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.5 or above.
  4. Students must meet minimum English language requirements set for the chosen Student Exchange Programme unless the chosen programmes are conducted in languages other than English and may have other language requirements set by the host institutions.
  5. The University, College and Department reserve the right to withdraw the Student Exchange Programme offer if the student fails to fulfill the programme requirements, which include but not limited to English language requirements.

Funding Support

  1. UGC-funded students should contact Global Engagement Office (GEO) to apply for the Student Exchange Fund and/or other funding. Please refer to GEO's website for details of the financial support provided by GEO.
  2. Funding support may be available from Student Development Service and is subject to the availability and merit of individual cases. Students are advised to pay attention to their emails for details.

Types of Programmes

There are three levels of Exchange Programmes for eligible students to choose from:

  1. Institutional Level Exchange Programmes (“i-level”)
    Institutional Level Exchange Programmes are based on the exchange agreements signed between CityU and partner institutions. For partners and quota, go to https://www.cityu.edu.hk/geo/StudentExchange; Click “Outgoing Exchange students” > “Student Exchange Partners”
  2. College Level Exchange Programmes (“c-level”)
    College Level Exchange Programmes are based on the exchange agreements signed between CLASS and partner institutions. For partners and quota, go to https://www.cityu.edu.hk/class/exchange/content; Click “Partner Institutions”
  3. Departmental Level Exchange Programmes (“d-level”)
    Departmental Level Exchange Programmes are based on the exchange agreements signed between Departments and partner institutions. Currently we are partners with the following departments: Department of Foreign Language and Literature, National Taiwan University; and College of International Education, Shanghai International Studies University.

Pre-application Information Sessions

  1. Students are encouraged to attend one of the Pre-application Information Sessions organized by GEO to learn about the exchange options, application requirements and funding resources. Please refer to https://www.cityu.edu.hk/geo/StudentExchange/application.html for the date and time of the information sessions.
  2. The Student Exchange Programmes Co-ordinator also introduces the exchange programmes and general guidelines for application at student orientation sessions at the beginning of the academic year.

Application Procedures and Post-exchange Report

  1. Students will receive email notifications form the college and/or the department when a specific round of application opens. The email usually includes detailed and updated information on application procedures and updated lists of exchange partners and quota.
  2. Students then first consult the LT Exchange Coordinator (Prof. Jixing LI; email: jixingli@cityu.edu.hk) about the suitability of the chosen courses, programmes and institutions, and then make final decisions and submit the required documents following instructions in relevant emails.
  3. Application results will be announced via email to successful applicants.
  4. Before departure, students should sign and submit the forms required by the University, College and the Department such as the Declaration Form for Outbound Exchange Students and the Final Study Plan to the LT General Office.
  5. After return from exchange, students should fill in the Credit Transfer Application Form and the Reflective Report Form. Transfer of credits may be granted to outbound exchange students if the courses taken at the host institution meet ALL of the following conditions: The courses’ level and content matches the CityU courses, with contact hours close to 39 hours similar to CityU’s courses (13 weeks x 3 hours per week) and grades equivalent to C- or above. Some gentle reminders for outbound students from LT

  1. You should plan your study so that you can stay at CityU for the last semester of your undergraduate programme before graduation in order to prepare for the next stage of your life (e.g. job-hunt, further studies). It will be inconvenient if you are not in Hong Kong.
  2. For the sake of academic integrity, since you will be awarded a degree from CityU, you should take the high-level courses at LT when you are most mature and prepared. The last semester should NOT be used to take low-level electives in other institutions.
  3. Consider for exchange in Semester B in Year 3 if you are from the JUPAS stream. If you go in Semester A, make sure you can study phonology in the host university. For Advanced standing students, make sure you can finish all the core courses and electives and graduate on time.
  4. There have been cases where students had to take the summer semester or graduate one semester later than the normal case. In any way, you are the one to make the final decision and you should know the trade-off well.
  5. Pick different good universities with offering of linguistics courses if you do not want to delay your graduation.
  6. Linguistics courses that are transferrable for credits should be equivalent in level and credit hours. If the courses are linguistics and we do not have an equivalent course at LT, a course code can be given for such courses as free electives.
  7. The signing of exchange forms is to make sure we know you got a plan. However, there may be changes unforeseeable and so email the major leader as needs arise when you are in the host university. We are always here to help facilitate your studies.
  8. While you study abroad, place safety as your top priority. Study well, make new friends, talk with professors and try to immerse into the foreign culture, comparing and contrasting it with yours.
  9. For students who are on exchange, please note that we do not arrange long-distance interviews for internship applications. If you are not physically here on campus in Sem B, no special request will be entertained regarding internship scheduling.
  10. Finally, save up some money for travelling a bit. A backpacker’s experience is different from when you are on a business trip as an employee in a large corporation. Learn how one can live differently, think differently and it will open up your mind for discovery, creativity, and innovation.
  11. CityU will offer you this golden opportunity of exchange and some financial support, but you have to earn it with good performance. All the best in what you are determined to do and get it done well.
