Summer Learning Programme in Lyon, France

Aims of the Programme

This programme aims to:

boost the language proficiency of student participants in French.
promote intercultural awareness among students.
enhance students’ knowledge of French culture and society.
promote a culture of achievement among students and instill a sense of responsibility about their own learning.

Intended Learning outcomes

By the end of their immersion programme students should

Have reached a level of proficiency in French that would enable them to use the language in familiar situations and contexts and carry out routine tasks with a considerable degree of autonomy, even though in some instances they may need the assistance of a native speaker.
Be able to explain issues related to French culture and society with a considerable degree of confidence.
Have gained an insight into French culture and society so that they can assess different situations requiring certain intercultural awareness.

Programme Activities

Students will have to enroll in the intensive language and culture programme offered by the Institut de Langue et Culture Françaises (ILCF) - Université Catholique de Lyon and plan for language immersion activities during their stay.

The ILCF offers a 80 hours programme over 4 weeks in July, including cultural activities and outings. A certificate corresponding to the level achieved during the course will be issued on completion.

Programme participants

Undergraduate students of any discipline who study French. They should fulfill the following criteria:

Have completed the French course LT2401 French 1.
Preference should be given to those senior students who have demonstrated great interest in their French studies and have a proven track record of consistently good results in this course.

Tasks for assessment of learning outcomes

Students will be required to show their certificate and write a report detailing their language and culture immersion experience and explaining the extent to which the intended Learning Outcomes specified in their study plan have been met. Students will be interviewed in the target language and will receive feedback on their written reports.

Discovery-Enriched Summer Programme on Teaching Spanish Language and Culture to Non-Native Speakers

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the Summer Programme are to:

enrich students with the knowledge of Spanish language and culture,
enrich students' knowledge of Spanish daily life and custom;
enable students to study the differences between their culture and foreign culture;
develop their interest and ability in teaching and studying foreign languages for further studies or potential career;
enhance their communication skills in Spanish.

By the end of their immersion programme students should

Have reached a level of proficiency in Spanish that would enable them to use the language in familiar situations and contexts and carry out routine routine tasks with a considerable degree of autonomy and confidence.
Have gained an insight into Spanish culture and society so that they can assess different situations requiring certain intercultural awareness.

Programme Activities

Participation in Spanish language classes.
Cultural tours to investigate culture and language use in Spain.
Real Spanish Experiences.

The program will take place in Cuenca, a historical city in the center of Spain.

Programme participants

In order to be selected, students should bave comnpleted at least the course LT2601 Spanish 1. They should also have demonstrated a strong commitment in learning Spanish and this immersion program will be presented as a great opportunity for those who have made great effort in their studies in Spanish courses at CityU and are prepared to going one mile further through an immersion experience in Spain. Priority will be given to students who have never had a global experience while studying in cityU.
