Ms Julia Han Ji Yeon

Teaching Excellence Award Winner 2005/2006

Ms Han joined City U in 2001. Being the programme coordinator of Korean Studies section in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics since 2003, she has launched a Minor in Korean Studies as well as several new courses in Korean language and culture in three years. Ms Han is devoted to creating an authentic and interesting language learning environment for students. She is making use of the University's e-learning platform, Blackboard Academic Suite, to provide interactive learning materials for students to learn the Korean alphabets, vocabulary and sentence structures. By collaboration with Seoul National University in Korea, in Semester A 2005, she jointly conducted a Korean language course through real-time video conferencing (VC). Students from both Hong Kong and Korea met each other through the state of the art VC facility of the Department's multipurpose room. Also, the students exchanged their ideas about the course materials and assignments on the online forum after the class. Ms. Han believes that culture plays an important role in Korean language learning. Thus, she tried to bring in authentic Korean culture in and outside of class. She organized a variety of academic/cultural workshops and lectures with guest speakers from Hong Kong and Korean community. They ranged from the CEO of a multinational Korean company, professors in Korean studies research, to an international Taekwondo master and his performing group, and Korean dancers and musicians. To provide students the opportunities to apply what they have learnt in class, she collaborated with the General Consulate of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong to organize the first summer internship programme in 2004 with seven participating Korean companies, including Samsung and LG Electronics HK Ltd. She has also contributed to promote cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Korea by producing and co-hosting a Korean language radio programme "Let's go Korea I, II" (http://www.rthk.org.hk/elearning/gogokorea2) with RTHK.
