Abstract
This study proposes a method to measure the probabilistic relations between terms and their syntactic functions. Taking noun phrases as its experimental units, it tries to examine whether there is any correlation between term occurrence and syntactic functions in order to improve the performance of term extraction systems. The results turn out to be quite indicative in terms of predicting terms according to syntactic functions of term candidates. It suggests that syntactic functions may be used as a reliable indicator for the calculating of termhood of term candidates. That is to say, higher weights will be given to those term candidates with syntactic functions ranked higher for better probabilistic estimates.
