The Phonetics Laboratory of the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong started in 1995. It serves the undergraduate/postgraduate students, teaching staff, and visitors of the department by providing research tools for facilitating (i) research projects on the acoustic, articulatory, perceptual, and physiological properties of speech sounds and (ii) teaching of the courses in phonetics and experimental phonetics offered by the department.
The Phonetics Laboratory maintains a collection of basic research tools, including Carstens EMA AG501, Articulate Instruments Micro-Ultrasound System, Glottal Enterprises Dualview System, and Kay-PENTAX Computerized Speech Lab 4500. Audio-recording provision available in the Phonetics Laboratory includes an IAC sound-proof booth and various types of high-quality digital recorders for use in the laboratory and during field trips.
Experimental studies have been carried out by the members of the Phonetics Laboratory, investigating the acoustic, articulatory and perceptual properties of the vowels, consonants and tones of the Chinese dialects, including Beijing Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, Ningbo, Suzhou, Fuzhou, Xiangxiang, and Taizhou. Other research projects include second language acquisition and typology of the sound systems.
