New Ways of Analysing Variation

Asia Pacific 9 / Hong Kong

11 to 13 June 2027

NWAV-AP 9 invites submissions on the theme “Variation and Change at and Across Boundaries.” This theme speaks to both the empirical realities and the methodological futures of sociolinguistic research in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. In sociolinguistic scholarship, boundaries—social, geographic, political, ideological, cognitive, and disciplinary—are often treated as fixed lines. This conference seeks to trouble those assumptions by foregrounding how language variation and change emerge precisely at the thresholds where different worlds, identities, and paradigms meet.
