Department-based Majors Allocation

(applicable to students admitted to the normative 4-year degree curriculum in 2016)

Students admitted to the normative 4-year degree curriculum will enter either the Linguistics and Language Applications-Major or the Translation and Interpretation-Major after finishing the first year of study. The top 40% of students, who have satisfied the criteria listed below, will have free choice of either major offered by the Department. The other 60% of students will be allocated a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual majors.

The top 40%

The top 40% of students in the department-based majors allocation will have a free choice of majors based on

  1. cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B of the first year of study;
  2. no failure grades in any courses in Semesters A and B in the first year of study; and
  3. completion of at least a total of 30 credit units in Semesters A and B in the first year of study, including the following courses required by the College and the Department:

The remaining 60%

The remaining 60% of students will be allocated based on the availability of places and the following criteria:

Linguistics and Language Applications-Major

  1. CGPA (75%)
  2. English score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (10%)
  3. Mathematics score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (5%)
  4. Priority of the major choices of students (10%)

Translation and Interpretation-Major

  1. CGPA (70%)
  2. English score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (10%)
  3. Chinese score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (10%)
  4. Priority of the major choices of students (10%)
