There are many varieties of English used to communicate across cultures. Effective communication among users of these different Englishes is best made possible by cultivating an awareness of the variation in Englishes and their social and ideational functions. This presentation argues against attempts to characterize a mythical internationally accepted variety of English unmarked for users’ sociocultural background for international communication.

Larry E. Smith, is President of Christopher, Smith & Associates (CSA) LLC, a leadership consulting firm with offices in Honolulu, Hawaii and Sydney, Australia (www.csaworks.com). Smith is also the Executive Director of the International Association for World Englishes, Inc. (www.iaweworks.org), a non-profit corporation headquartered in Honolulu. He is on the graduate faculty of the Japan-America Institute of Management Science and is co-founder/co-editor (since 1985) with Braj B. Kachru of the professional journal World Englishes, published by Blackwell Publishers in Oxford, England.
