LIU, Meichun
Biography
Prof. Meichun Liu (劉美君教授) is a linguist and former Head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation at City University of Hong Kong. She is also a fellow and executive committee member of Hong Kong Academy of Humanities. She received her PhD in Linguistics in 1993 from University of Colorado at Boulder with a Certificate in Cognitive Science. After a year of post-doctoral training in the Institute of Information Science at Academia Sinica, she was recruited as one of the founding faculty members in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Taiwan National Chiao Tung University in 1994. She had served as the Chair of the Department, Director of Internationalization, and Library Director at NCTU before joining CityU in 2015. Her areas of expertise are Functional syntax, Lexical semantics, Cognitive linguistics, Corpus linguistics, and Usage-based construction grammar.
Prof. Liu is interested in promoting cross-disciplinary research by applying corpus-based, empirical or computational approaches to Chinese linguistic issues. She has been building two web resources that provide linguistic wisdom for applicational purposes. The Mandarin VerbNet offers frame-based lexical semantic information on Chinese verbs and verb classes(http://verbnet.lt.cityu.edu.hk/#/). The interactive platform Ask-me-why provides linguistic accounts of the varied form-meaning mapping strategies in English and Chinese (https://grammar.lt.cityu.edu.hk/questions/recommend).
Dedicated to innovative research and teaching, Professor Liu has supervised 5 postdocs, 15 PhDs, and 50+ MA graduates. She has offered popular OCW and MOOC classes to promote knowledge transfer and won a number of teaching and research awards. She has published 6 monographs, over 100 indexed journal papers and book chapters, in additional to 500+ conference papers and numerous invited talks. Two of her books, Making Sense of English Grammar and Making Sense of English Writing are among the best sellers for language education in Taiwan.
