Emeritus Professor Benjamin K. Tsou of our department, City University of Hong Kong gave a well-received speech titled "Reflective Tracking of Salient Developments in Chinese Language and Society by means of Big Data" at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen on April 22, 2026.
Hosted by the School of Humanities and Social Science, the lecture explored how large-scale linguistic databases illuminate China’s societal transformations. Professor Tsou introduced the 7-billion-character LIVAC corpus and a bilingual patent database, demonstrating their use in analyzing media trends, ethnic dynamics, gender equality, and linguistic innovations. Attendees gained hands-on experience with the tools, offering valuable insights into digital humanities research at the intersection of language, technology, and society.
