IWoLP 2027 (6–8 Jan Hong Kong)

IWoLP 2027

The International Workshop on Language Production (IWoLP) is a biennial conference series and one of the most prestigious venues in cognitive science for research on how the brain produces language. Since its inaugural meeting in Marseille in 2004, IWoLP has brought together leading scholars across linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and computer science for keynote talks, poster sessions, and parallel sessions on topics from lexical selection and syntactic encoding to bilingual production, monitoring, and multimodal communication.

Hosting IWoLP 2027 in Hong Kong marks the first edition in the Asia-Pacific region. It opens new opportunities for regional collaboration, strengthens the global visibility of language production research in Asia, and provides an invaluable platform for early-career researchers to engage with the international community. The 2027 theme, “Language Production in Multilingual Minds”, highlights how multilingual speakers produce language and how cognitive, neural, and computational approaches illuminate production in multilingual settings.

Background

The International Workshop on Language Production (IWoLP) is one of the most prestigious biennial conference series in the field of cognitive science, bringing together leading international researchers who study how the brain produces language.

Founded in 2004 in Marseille, France, IWoLP has developed into the premier venue for multidisciplinary discussion on language production research. Each edition features (i) keynote-style talks from world-renowned scholars and (ii) poster sessions.

Despite Asia’s growing contributions to cognitive science and language research, IWoLP has never been hosted in the Asia-Pacific region. Bringing IWoLP 2027 to Hong Kong will mark a milestone, opening new opportunities for regional collaboration and strengthening the global visibility of language production research conducted in Asia. It will also provide an invaluable platform for early-career researchers in the region to engage with leading international experts and build lasting research networks.

Conference Objectives

  • Provide a leading international platform for cutting-edge language production research.
  • Foster interdisciplinary dialogue across linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and computational linguistics.
  • Highlight multilingual language production research in Asia-Pacific contexts.
  • Strengthen international research networks.

Call for Papers

The theme for IWoLP 2027 is “Language Production in Multilingual Minds”.

We invite contributions addressing how language is produced in multilingual speakers and minds, and how cognitive, neural, and computational mechanisms account for language production in multilingual settings.

Topics of interest include:

  • Lexical selection and processing
  • Syntactic encoding
  • Phonological processing
  • Speech articulation
  • Bilingual language production
  • Monitoring and control mechanisms
  • Gesture and multimodal communication
  • Language production disorders

In line with the conference objectives, the programme will provide an international platform for cutting-edge research. An online programme booklet and book of abstracts will be publicly available, and selected contributions may be invited for publication in a special issue of Language, Cognition and Neuroscience.

Submission Portal (EasyChair)

Abstracts are submitted via our EasyChair portal (used for submission collection and review):

Submission Timeline

Abstract submission deadline
30 September 2026 (GMT+8)

As in previous IWoLP editions, we invite abstract submissions for posters only. The length of the abstract should be up to 300 words.
