Programme Nature, Purpose, and Structure

 

This 4-week summer programme on "Intercultural Communication, Literature, and TESOL" will be offered by the University of York.

 

The programme aims to:

 

  1. introduce students to key areas in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL);
  2. develop students’ intercultural communication and competence;
  3. develop students’ skills in interpreting literary texts;
  4. enhance students’ English language skills;
  5. enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills by engaging them in learning activities.

 

This programme comprises four learning components (as listed below), on-campus activities, and cultural visits.

 

  1. English language and skills development
  2. Literature
  3. Intercultural training and competence
  4. Teaching English as a Second Language

Intended Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of the programme, students will be able to:

 

  1. complete all the assessment tasks assigned by the University of York (including class participation, teaching practice; reflective journal, and poster presentation).
  2. critically reflect on their global learning experiences in their written work;
  3. create a video that highlights their learning outcomes and discovery;
  4. apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the tour to study an academic topic related to their major programme (only for the students who take the 3-credit unit elective course, LT3399 LT Global Study, in the summer semester, 2024-2025).

 

Programme Itinerary

 

Outbound: 

28 June 2025 (Sat) from HK to London Heathrow Airport by flight, 

29 June 2025 (Sun) from Heathrow to the University of York by coach

 

Inbound: 

26 July 2025 (Sat) from the University of York to London Heathrow Airport by coach, from London Heathrow to Hong Kong by flight

27 July 2025  (Sun) Arrive at Hong Kong 

 

 

Programme participants

 

25 full-time UGC-funded undergraduates participated in the programme.

 

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

 

All the participants are required to complete the following assessment tasks:

 

  1. All the assessment tasks assigned by the University of York, including class participation, teaching practice; reflective journal, and poster presentation (an evaluation report will be given to each student).
  2. Individual reflective report: The reflective writing (1000-1200 words) requires students to critically reflect on their learning experience after completing the programme and joining the learning activities.
  3. A 5-min group video (with 5 photos attached): It highlights students’ learning outcomes and discovery. 3-4 students in a group.

 

Students' assignments will be submitted at the end of August. Feedback on students' assessment tasks will be given in a post-programme meeting to be scheduled no later than mid of September. A survey will be conducted to students to collect their feedback on the programme.
