Mainland Collaboration Scheme - Joint PhD Programme

Joint PhD Programme is a joint offer of a full-time PhD programme between City University of Hong Kong and another institution. On satisfactory completion of study and having fulfilled all the prescribed requirements, the student will be admitted to PhD degree awarded by City University of Hong Kong for successful completion of the joint programme with partner institution.


Announcement will be made by the Graduate School or HK-Macau-Taiwan Office of the home university. Applications will be open in early November of a year for commencement of the joint PhD programme in September of the following year, and the deadline is usually set in mid-January. All applications must be submitted to and endorsed by the Graduate School or HK-Macau-Taiwan Office of the home university. Students must NOT submit their applications to City University of Hong Kong directly.

Application Requirement

English Proficiency Requirement

(applicable to 2019 intake and thereafter)

  • a minimum TOEFL* score of 79 (Internet-based test), with a minimum of 15 for Reading, 15 for Listening, 17 for Writing, and 18 for Speaking; or
  • a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6 for each of the sub-categories including Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

* TOEFL Paper-based test (before October 2017) and Paper-delivered test (after October 2017) will not be accepted as there is no Speaking component.

Research Proposal

Please submit a research proposal to the Department (email: Email address:ctsso@cityu.edu.hkctsso@cityu.edu.hk) by the application deadline.

The proposal should be written in English and include:

  1. Research topic
  2. Aims and research questions
  3. Research background
  4. Research methods
  5. Research plan, and
  6. A list of references cited in the proposal
