Interpreting Evaluation Criteria Perceived by College Learners

Abstract
Much of research on interpreting is concerned with the elaboration of quality criteria focusing on the evaluation and expectation of receivers, interpreters, associations and trainers, while the literature on learners’ perceptions about interpreting evaluation criteria is relatively limited. This paper intends to investigate the interpreting evaluation criteria perceived by college learners in a consecutive interpreting course. The investigator has reviewed a variety of perspectives on interpreting evaluation criteria in interpreting studies and focused on the special characteristics of interpreting evaluation criteria perceived by interpreting learners based on class observation, interviews and survey studies. The findings show that learners considered accuracy and completeness as most important interpreting criteria and tend to give negative comments of the interpreting performance of their peers based on these two criteria. The findings provide the educators and the learners with an important source of exploring appropriate ways of self-evaluation and peer-evaluation, understanding the learning process of the learners and predicting their potential to make further advance in the consecutive interpreting course.
