Abstract
Informed by Critical Discourse Analysis and skopos theory, the paper examines how the TT producer deals with the relationship between the TT and the ST when the traditional concept of faithfulness meets challenges arising from the complex power relations among participants involved in the translating process.
With reference to Living History and its two Chinese versions, the paper investigates how the TT producer’s definition of ‘faithfulness’ shapes the translation in terms of the topical selection and presentation. The findings are then discussed in association with the relationship between the ST sender, the TT producer, the TT reader and their socio-cultural backgrounds. Notions from skopos theory and the critical view of language use from critical discourse analysis allow us to have a close look at how complex power relations pose challenges to and reshape the traditional concept of faithfulness. This will inevitably lead me onto issues around the TT producer’s mediation in translation, readership categorization, censorship and power control.
Speaker
Ms Wang Hui received her Master degree in English linguistics and literature from Sun Yat-sen University. She had taught in South China University of Technology before moving on to start a doctoral research in Translation Studies at City University of Hong Kong. Her research interest includes translation studies and discourse analysis. She has published academic writings in translation theory.
