Abstract

The traditional definition of term is based on the conceptualization of object (or entity) and terms are considered concept carriers, or formally put, linguistic representations of key concepts in a subject field. Consequently most terms are nouns or noun phrases. Through our in-depth analysis of the legal terms in BLIS (Bilingual Law Information System) corpus, which is the complete collection of Hong Kong laws texts, we find that the legal terms includes not only nouns or noun phrases, but also verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and even prepositional phrases. In regard to evidence of this kind, we attempt to extend the conceptualization-oriented definition of terminology by defining it as the vocabulary for special purpose (VSP) in a language for special purpose (LSP). We provide evidence to show that a term may refer to an entity or any of its ontological attributes and find that special usage of words and phrases for special purpose is one of the main causes to lead to new terms in a special domain.
