Abstract
Christian allegorization of the Bible, there is a tradition in biblical exegesis from Augustine to Thomas Aquinas and then Martin Luther that holds that any interpretation must be based on the literal sense of the Scripture. Zhu Xi in Sung dynasty China was doing something similar in his effort to save the texts of Confucian classics and their meaning from heavily allegorical interpretations of the Han commentators. Umberto Eco's concept of the "intention of the text" (intentio operis) is a modern variation of the same idea, and we should re-emphasize the idea of the integrity of the text and the linguistic basis of all interpretations.
