Emergent Grammar in Conversational Discourse of Beijing Mandarin 北京話對話篇章的動態語法

Abstract

1. The Notion of Emergent Grammar 2. General Features of Contemporary Beijing Mandarin 3. Case Studies According to recent studies on grammaticalization, discourse pragmatics provides much of the substance of syntax. It is found that even a grammatical category is derived from its usage in discourse with some pragmatic motivations. In this presentation, these cases will be discussed: shuo : speech verb > subordinator zhe/yi : demonstrative > definite article/indefinite article ta : pronoun > complementizer Some features of contemporary Beijing Mandarin will be noted.
