Aspects of Functional Discourse Analysis
Time: 4:30 - 6:00 pm
Date: 24th February 2003 (Monday)
Venue: B7603 (CTL Multi-purpose Room), City University of Hong Kong
Abstract
The talk will begin by arguing that a systemic-functional approach to discourse analysis (i.e. Functional Discourse Analysis) should be recognized as one of the important approaches to discourse studies (cf. Schiffrin 1994). The talk will then outline the aim, underlying assumptions, scope and methods of functional discourse analysis, arguing that grammatical analysis is an essential component in discourse analysis. Finally, it will be illustrated how a systemic-functional approach to discourse analysis is applicable in practice.
