Rethinking Genre

Abstract
Genre has been a notion that has existed for a long time. Within linguistics, the concept has been primarily associated with discourse analysis. Of the schools in linguistics and analytical methods, genre analysis and systemic-functional linguistics have been in the forefront in terms of using genre in association with language teaching. Genre is seen as a communicative event or process which are negotiated and decided on by professionals or a certain community. However, is such a view flexible enough to the changing nature of a language, particularly with the wide use of English. There are several factors which will be examined: time factor, suitability factor, construction/ reconstruction factor, and challenge factor.

Virginia Peng is an associate professor of English with the Faculty of Economics at Ritsumeikan University for which she has been a part of for 12 years. Her interests have been in English language teaching primarily as she is teaching English. However, her research interests have been in Systemic-Functional linguistics and neurolinguistics. Recently, she has been interested in genre and the application of systemic-functional theory in language teaching.
Ms. Peng completed a paragraph writing textbook with 3 colleagues, Neil Heffernan, Junko Otoshi and Hiroko Sugimura, last year entitled Core Perspectives published by Macmillan Language House and has been actively involved in materials development for Reading 3 and 4 for the Faculty of Economics English program.
Last year she became the Vice President of the Japan Association of Systemic Functional Linguistics. She is also a member of the Japan Association of Language Teachers and the Japan Association of College English Teachers for which she has been actively participating in the English for Specific Purposes group.
