Aims of Major

This major aims to produce language professionals who are familiar with language-related application of computers. Students will also develop an analytical mind and an open attitude towards people from different cultures.

For Prospective Students

Besides being a well-established academic discipline in its own right, linguistics, the scientific study of language, often plays an important role in curricula of language-related majors in universities of the world. In Hong Kong, linguistics degrees are in general recognized as English language majors for the purpose of teaching in schools. Linguistics students may have their strengths in other languages and may choose careers in various language-related fields. Coupling language with information technology also gives students an advantage in the modern world.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to:

(1) Apply knowledge of linguistics and modern language technology to their professional careers;

(2) Perform, as proficient, effective and versatile communicators with a good understanding of the nature of language, language-related tasks in a competitive and multilingual workplace;

(3) Benefit from their exposure to world languages and cultures when working with people in an international and culturally diverse workplace;

(4) Think analytically, critically and creatively, and apply their training in knowledge discovery, evaluating alternatives and formulating ideas, which may be innovative, to their study, work and life;

(5) Continue to develop intellectually in a life-long learning process.

Academic Excellence

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017, City University has 6 subjects ranked in the Top 50. Linguistics is ranked 26th this year, which is the highest in CityU and is the only subject in CityU which is ranked in the Top 30. Linguistics of City University is also ranked the third in Hong Kong.
