Abstract
“Pound is the inventor of Chinese poetry for our time,” says T．S．Eliot, and these words indicate that Ezra Pound (1885-1972), a leading poet of his time, blazed a new trail for modernist poets to follow. It is reasonable to say that no literary figure of the past century—in America or perhaps in any other Western country—is comparable to Ezra Pound in the scope and depth of his exchange with China (Professor Zhaoming Qian’s words). But how did Pound get to know China? Who were his Chinese friends? How well did he know Chinese? How did he go about rendering Chinese texts into English? Based on extensive research on Pound’s letters, diaries, poems and essays, this presentation will tell the story of Ezra Pound and China.
Speaker
Jiang Hongxin (蔣洪新) has his Ph. D. from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (中国社会科学院). He is Professor of Literature and Vice President of Hunan Normal University, China, and currently a Visiting Professor in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics at the City University of Hong Kong. He has held the position of a visiting professor in several universities in the U. S., U. K., and South Korea. His research interests include comparative literature, translation, and higher education. He has published 8 books and 60 articles, among which his representative works are Towards Four Quartets: A Study of T. S. Eliot’s Poetics (Hunan People’s Press,1998); The New Direction of English Poetry (Hunan Educational Press,2001); A Comparative Study of Hunan Culture and Western Culture (Yue Lu Press,2006). He won China’s New Century Young Talents Award in 2005 (Chinese Ministry of Education) and National Young Talents Award in 2006 (Chinese Ministry of Human Resource). He is the P. I. of two National Social Science Research Grants in 1997 and 2003, as well as ten provincial level research grants.
