Abstract

“Pound is the inventor of Chinese poetry for our time,” says T.S.Eliot, and these words indicate that Ezra Pound (1885-1972), a leading poet of his time, blazed a new trail for modernist poets to follow. It is reasonable to say that no literary figure of the past century—in America or perhaps in any other Western country—is comparable to Ezra Pound in the scope and depth of his exchange with China (Professor Zhaoming Qian’s words). But how did Pound get to know China? Who were his Chinese friends? How well did he know Chinese? How did he go about rendering Chinese texts into English? Based on extensive research on Pound’s letters, diaries, poems and essays, this presentation will tell the story of Ezra Pound and China.
