Abstract

This is a comparative study of grammatical categories in generative grammar and parts of speech in traditional grammar. Although the problems of parts of speech in the traditional sense have never been a core issue in generative grammar, its claims and arguments about the distinction between lexical an functional categories, and that between overt lexical items and empty categories are highly insightful. What is even more significant is its cross category generalization of three distinctive features [+/-N] [+/-V] [+/-F] articulated by generative grammarians since it not only may define the eight major grammatical categories but also function to describe the relationships of those categories.
