Abstract

There are many varieties of English used to communicate across cultures. Effective communication among users of these different Englishes is best made possible by cultivating an awareness of the variation in Englishes and their social and ideational functions. This presentation argues against attempts to characterize a mythical internationally accepted variety of English unmarked for users’ sociocultural background for international communication.
