Consecutive Interpreting – What and How to Interpret

Abstract
Consecutive Interpreting is often perceived, practised and taught as translation between two languages done verbally. This seminar attempts to provide an overview of Consecutive Interpreting as the most complex type of interpreting there is. It will do so through discussions of some of the key challenges and of notions such as “3 Highs”, “4 FCs” and “5 As”. The issue of “how to interpret” will be explored together with “what to interpret”. The conclusion will be that the objective of a Consecutive Interpreter should be to re-create an audience experience. The seminar is designed to be non-specialist, thought-provoking and fun.
Speaker
Dr Kevin Lin has been the Lead Interpreter (Chinese) of the British Government since the mid 1990s. He has interpreted for the Queen and successive British Prime Ministers. He accompanied Gordon Brown to China in January this year and has done so with Tony Blair three times previously.
Over the past ten years, Dr Lin has worked at every top level meeting of the British Government with Chinese leaders including the current/previous President, current/previous Premiers and many other Vice Premiers as well as ministers. His company provides Chinese services to many leading organizations, covering subject matters from finance to law, from chemistry to automobile.
Dr Lin is the lead lecturer on MA Interpreting at Middlesex University, UK. He also gives lectures and workshops at many other universities across the UK and China. His textbook on Consecutive Interpreting published in both Beijing and Taipei is very popular among students and practising professionals. He has a PhD in Linguistics from Lancaster University, UK.
