The Department has announced that the project entitled “A Remote-Access Multilingual Corpus-Based System for Linguistic Applications” (RAMCORP) has successfully won HKD750,000 from the University under the Scholarship Enhancement Scheme, to be matched by an equal amount from the CTL department, totalling HKD1,500,000. The RAMCORP project aims at the construction and annotation of a large corpus, which will comprise parallel texts in Chinese and English. Once completed, the corpus will enable linguistic research that will eventually lead to a range of applications including text retrieval, machine translation, interactive speech recognition, and classroom teaching. The project is widely participated by members from both the CTL department and the Hallliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies. Dr Jonathan Webster will be leading the project as Principle Investigator. The co-investigators include, in alphabetical order, Alex C. Fang, Chunyu Kit, Olivia Kwong, Tom Lai, Caesar Lun, Haihua Pan, Kin Kui Sin, Jonathan Webster, Eric Zee, and Chunshen Zhu.
