The Research of Portuguese-Chinese Machine Translation in Macao

Abstract The first part reviews the machine translation research in Macao, including its history, current developments and future directions, with a focus on Portuguese-Chinese MT. The second part presents demonstrations of the word-by-word instant translation system, PCT 3.0, and the sentence-based machine-aided translation system, PCT Assistente 2.0. The third part will focus on the underlying principles and technologies, such as the knowledge representation scheme and the constraint grammar for modeling bilingual text,that have been applied to develop these systems.
Speaker
Dr. WONG Fai, Derek received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. both in software engineering from the University of Macau in 1995 and 1999 respectively, and Ph.D. in Department of Automation from the Tsinghua University in 2005. From 1995 to 1996, he was a researcher trainee of INESC, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Lisbon, Portugal. In 1996, he joined the Faculty of Science and Technology, the University of Macau, and the INESC-Macau (Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores de Macau), Macau SAR. He is currently a research fellow in the University of Macau and works for INESC-Macau as a researcher/engineer, where he has been in charge of the "Speech and Language Processing" group since 1999. He participated in the research and technical developments for a number of machine translation projects.
