3. Case Studies
According to recent studies on grammaticalization, discourse pragmatics provides much of the substance of syntax. It is found that even a grammatical category is derived from its usage in discourse with some pragmatic motivations.
In this presentation, these cases will be discussed:
shuo : speech verb > subordinator
zhe/yi : demonstrative > definite article/indefinite article
ta : pronoun > complementizer
Some features of contemporary Beijing Mandarin will be noted.
