Abstract 摘要
All of us, whether as language learners or language instructors, regularly and rather freely refer to certain grammatical structures/constructions as 'difficult', probably meaning 'hard to master'. "Difficult" is a valid feature and plays a rather central role in a pedagogical grammar. This talk in the series will focus on defining this feature on a set of principles as illustrated in the following:
Principle 1: "Difficulty" increases with complexity in structures. Principle 2: "Difficulty" increases with complexity in semantics. Principle 3: "Difficulty" increases with inter-language distance. Principle 4: "Difficulty" increases with non-systematicity. Principle 5: "Difficulty" increases with interactional property.
Once defined and made quantifiable, the feature 'difficult' plays an important role in sequencing syntactic structures in pedagogical grammar, which will be the focus in the next talk (4/5).
