Mr. Yang Lian is a Chinese poet and writer, and, after the death of Mao Zedong in 1976, was associated with the "Obscure Poetry" and "Misty Spring" movements in China. Since leaving China in 1989, he has lived in Australia, Germany, the U.S. and England, and has given readings and presentations throughout much of Europe, the "Pacific Rim," and the U.S. He now lives in London, where he is active both as a poet and as a commentator on the Chinese cultural scene in the European media. He is the author of numerous collections of poetry, he has read and lectured widely throughout Europe, the U.S. and the Pacific Rim, and his poems have been translated into English and several other European languages.

Yang Lian began writing during the upheavals of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1970s. He participated in the "Beijing Spring" democratic movement of 1978, and was a contributor to the literary magazines Today and Dandelion. From 1986 to 1991, he traveled abroad extensively, giving readings and presentations in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Great Britain, France, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and the United States. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Auckland (1989-90), a Writer in Residence at the Berliner Kunstlerprogramm, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD, 1991-92), Visiting Scholar and Writer in Residence at the University of Sydney (1992-93), the first Chinese resident at the Yaddo art colony (1992, 1994, 1997), a Copeland Fellow at Amherst College (1993-94), a Fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany (1994-95), a Visiting Scholar at the University of Westminster (1996), and a Bellagio Fellow at the Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy (1996), among others. During these years, he also has given many readings in American, British and European colleges, universities and conference and festival venues.

His first volume of poetry, Ritualization of the Soul, was published in 1985 in Xian. Over the next ten years, he published seven additional volumes of poetry in Chinese, as well as a volume of collected poems in 1998 (Yang Lian Zuo Pin 1982-97). He has also published an additional ten books in Chinese and as translation, including Masks and Crocodile (Mianju yu Eyu, Sydney: Wild Peony, 1990), Non-Person Singular (Wuren Cheng, London: Wellsweep Press, 1994), Where the Sea Stands Still (Da Hai Ting Zhi Zhi Chu, Wellsweep Press, 1995) and Where the Sea Stands Still: New Poems (Da Hai Ting Zhi Zhi Chu: Xin Shi Ji, Newcastle: Bloodaxe Books, 1999).

Mr. Yang is not only a distinguished poet of continually increasing reputation, he is also an active commentator on, and at times a lively critic of, the Chinese cultural and political scene. He lectures frequently, and writes columns for the Times Literary Supplement. His poems have been translated into many languages, including English, German, Dutch, Danish and Italian. He is unusual among expatriate Chinese poets for a very nuanced understanding of the problems and possibilities of Chinese-Western cultural and poetic interactions, this in part because he has lived and worked in so many places outside China.
