Abstract

Ontology, as a branch of philosophy, seeks to provide a systematic account of existence in general.  Recent years have witnessed an explosive amount of research in the computer science (CS) and information systems (IS) disciplines in applying and extending ontological principles to various CS/IS domains, including knowledge representation, natural language processing, conceptual modeling, the Semantic Web, etc.  This paper presents a taxonomy of ontological research in the CS/IS and accounting disciplines and provides an organized look at the literature, examining how the two disciplines can inform one another, and identifying related research opportunities in accounting information systems (AIS).
