Phonetic Study on Speech Multi-modality of Mandarin

Abstract

 

Mandarin is the most popular used speech of Chinese in China, and phonetic study on it has very important significance in speech knowledge obtaining, Mandarin teaching for dialect speakers and foreigners, Mandarin resume of disabled persons, speech science and technology, and so on.  A research project named as 'Research on speech multi-modality of Mandarin' was set up in the linguistic lab of Peking University in 2003.  The research includes 1) a study on vocal tract of Mandarin through X-ray and MRI; 2) a study on dynamic glottis through high-speed imaging; 3) a study on consonant articulation through electronic palatal meter; 4) a study on lip movement through infrared ray motion capture; 5) a study on prosody of Mandarin through breathy belt.  Based on these studies, the phonetic study on multi modality of Mandarin is studied and discussed linguistically, acoustically and physiologically, and the future application in Mandarin teaching is also introduced briefly.

 

 

 

Speaker

 

Kong Jiangping got his B.A. at the Department of Foreign Language and Literature, Zhenzhou University in 1981, and M.A. at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1988. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong in 2001.

He joined the Department of Basic Courses at College of Zhenzhou Technology as an Assistant Professor of English during 1982 to 1985, and the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as an Associate and Full Professor during 1988 to 2003. He joined the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking University as a Full Professor of Phonetics and Linguistics, and the Director of Linguistic Lab from 2003 to present. Now he works as a Visiting Professor and the Executive Director of Hong Kong Putonghua Education and Assessment Centre at the Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong from April 2009 to April 2010.
