Abstract

The term Constructional Meaning refers to the meaning of a particular syntactic construction. Both grammatical semantics (Wierzbicka 1988) and construction grammar (Goldberg 1995) maintains the existence of constructional meanings. This talk discusses constructional meaning with particular reference to the English internal dative. It aims to explore several issues as related to the topic, e.g. the identification of constructional meaning, the meaning difference between internal and external dative, semantic constraints, and grammatical acceptability.
