Abstract
DZONGKHA (also known as DRUKKE, DRUKHA, DUKPA, BHUTANESE, JONKHA, LHOKE,
LHOSKAD, HLOKA, LHOKA, BHOTIA OF BHUTAN, BHOTIA OF DUKPA, ZONGKHAR, and ZONKAR) is the official language of the kingdom of Bhutan. The word "Dzongkha" means the language spoken in the Rdzong (political and
economic centers) in Bhutan.
This study is based on data collected from Dzongkha speakers by the
presenter in 1997 and 2000. In this presentation, firstly, an outline of Dzongkha grammar will be presented, then synchronic phonological system will be discussed as well as the historical development of Dzhongkha phonology. Also, the linguistic situation in Bhutan will be discussed.
