Language politeness is an interesting subject for theoretical and practical studies. Since 1970’s, some significant researches have been made in this field by scholars from various parts of the world. Some new theories and methodologies have been suggested with the recent development in anthropology, psychology, pragmatics and other disciplines. In this seminar, the speaker will discuss a number of new models in terms of degree, mechanism, typology and maxims of language politeness. Some suggestions will also be made on the cross-cultural studies in the forms and usage of politeness in different languages.
Housheng Qian, BA in English language and literature (Nanjing University, PRC), and MA in linguistics (University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK), was professor and deputy dean of the Institute for Overseas Students, Nanjing University. He is now Director of the Commercial Press Shanghai Information Centre. His research interests chiefly include English and Chinese language studies, lexicography and translation.
