Abstract
The study investigated the effectiveness of three types of pedagogical strategies, namely implicit learning, explicit inductive learning and explicit deductive learning, in facilitating Chinese ESL learners’ acquisition of the English causative alternation. A computerized concordancer program was designed and implemented in the quasi-experimental study. Results from a grammaticality judgment test and a production test administrated in pretest, immediate posttest and delayed test suggested that the two explicit groups outperformed the implicit one, while within the two explicit groups, no significant difference was found, except that explicit deductive group performed slightly better in the delayed test.
