Temporal Information

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a joint ISO-TimeML project that aims at establishing a semantically coherent framework for temporal annotation as an international standard. The established framework provides a formal specification language called ISO-TimeML for temporal information markup and includes a specific set of guidelines for such markup. Adopting XML as its formal language, the ISO-TimeML annotation standard is expected to provide a systematic way to extract and represent temporal information, as well as to facilitate the exchange of temporal information, both between operational language processing systems and between different temporal representation schemes. Furthermore, the standard will support ordinary temporal reasoning among both human and machine agents. Within a set of standardized guidelines, temporal information could be annotated to sufficient depth and detail, adequate for specifying/carrying out natural language semantic tasks with partial and underspecified representations.

Prof. Kiyong LEE, is professor emeritus of Korea University. As a Montague grammarian, he has been specializing in formal and computational semantics. He is also actively engaged in international activities of ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, as Convener and Project Leader in the area of language resource management. He was the editor for ISO 24610-1 Language Resource Management – Feature Structures, Part 1: Feature Structure Representation, a joint work with the TEI Consortium, which was accepted by the ISO CS for publication as an international standard. Currently he is project leader of two more ISO projects: ISO 24610-2 Feature System Declaration and ISO 2461x-1 Semantic Annotation Framework – Part 1: Time and Events.
Professor Kiyong Lee was formerly president of the Linguistic Society of Korea (1990-92) and also president of the Korean Society for Cognitive Science (1989-1990). He was one of the founders of the Pacific-Asia Conference on Language, Information, and Computation (PACLIC). He was chair of the Committee on the Korean Language and Information, Ministry of Information and Tourism (1998-2002). His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin (1974), an M.A. in English from Chonnam National University, Korea (1967), and a B.A. from Saint Louis University in St. Louis, U.S.A. with an emphasis on classical study, mathematics and philosophy (1963).
His publications includes : On Montague Grammar, Hanshin, Seoul, 1985, and the following four books written in Korean: Language and the World: Formal Semantics, Taehaksa, Seoul, 1998, Tense and Modality: Possible-Worlds Semantics, Taehaksa, Seoul 1998, Situation and Information: Situation Semantics, Taehaksa, Seoul, 1998, and Computational Morphology, Korea University Press, 1999. He coauthored six other books on linguistics and published over 80 linguistic papers.
