Abstract
The talk will present how linguistic information can be modeled in an ontological engineering environment and made, consequently, accessible for mapping between linguistic resources by means of hierarchical and axiomatic processing. Information is represented in terms of interconnecting nodes on the basis of Relational Network Theory. With this model, WordNet and FrameNet, which are linguistic resources representing different strata of linguistic information, can be mapped with each other. Implicit information covertly existing in the generated knowledge base can be revealed through axiomatic inference by uncovering latent links among the nodes. The mapping between WordNet and FrameNet is further improved by interfacing with an ontology, Suggested Upper Merged Ontology (SUMO). The exploitation of the ontology-interfaced mapping allows an automatic extension of FrameNet’s word list (Lexical Units) with WordNet verbs.

Mr. Ian C. Chow is a PhD student in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include computational lexicography and linguistic knowledge base engineering in the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Ontology Engineering.
Mr. Billy Wong Tak Ming is an Mphil student in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong. His research interests mainly concern with the user perspective and language model in Machine Translation.
