The novel Fortress Besieged by contemporary well-known writer and scholar Qian Zhongshu consists of at least three Parts, i.e., Parts 5, 6, and 7, which narrates a story relating to San Lu Da Xue “三闾大学”. Qian Zhongshu worked in National Normal University (“San Lu Da Xue” in the novel) from 1939 to 1941. He put into his novel many happenings around him and others in this university. This talk is about some stories inside and outside “San Lu Da xue”: why and how Qian Zhongshu came to this university and what he did in this university. Historical documents, interviews, pictures about Qian Zhongshu and his Fortress Besieged are presented in order to add some interesting reading on Fortes Besieged.
Jiang Hongxin,Professor of Literature and the Vice President of Hunan Normal University, received his Ph.D. from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (中国社会科学院). He was a visiting scholar in UCSD from 2001 to 2002. At present he is invited as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include comparative literature, translation and higher education. He has published 8 books and 60 articles, among which his representative works are Towards Four Quartets: A Study on T. S. Eliot’s Poetics (Hunan People’s Press, 1998) and The Direction of English Poetry (Hunan Educational Press, 2001). He received China’s New Century Young Talents Fund of 2005 (sponsored by the Ministry of Education,PRC) and two grants from State Social Science Research Program respectively in 1997 and 2003.
